Sometimes, when I look at the world we live in today, my heart feels heavy. We are surrounded by chaos-climate crises, wars, technologies beyond human ingenuity and broken systems and yet, so often, we believe the solution lies in building better policies, creating smarter technologies, or chasing endless economic growth. But deep inside, none of this will save us unless we change ourselves first.

It’s not the systems, it’s not the machines-it’s us: the people. Especially the ones who lead us. If there’s one thing I am certain of, it’s that our survival now depends on the kind of people we choose to lead and the kind of hearts they carry.

When I think of what true leadership should look like, I think of His Majesty the King. In a small, peaceful corner of the world, His Majesty leads with grace and compassion that feels almost forgotten elsewhere. He puts the happiness of his people before wealth. He guards nature for future generations. He walks among his people, listens to their hopes and fears, and carries the weight of the nation with humility.

In a world so obsessed with power, His Majesty reminds me that true leadership isn’t about ruling-it’s about serving. If every world leader today lead with the heart and wisdom of my King, I believe that, this world would be in a better place than today.

We are standing at a crossroads- one path leads to extinction, the other to a rebirth of hope. But this hope demands a deep and urgent evolution in leadership. It demands compassion that stretches beyond borders. It demands integrity that doesn’t buckle under pressure. It demands a vision that sees a hundred years ahead, not just the next election. His Majesty has shown us that it’s possible. That you can lead with love and still lead powerfully. That you can choose the well-being of your people over the vanity of numbers and still create a flourishing nation. Every time I look at Bhutan, I feel it in my soul: we already have the example the world desperately needs.

I write these words because I believe the time is running out. If we keep trying to fix the world without first fixing the people at the helm, we will lose everything. It’s not the policies that need the change. It’s not systems that need rebooting. It’s us. Our values. Our hearts. Our leaders.

If those in power could find even a fraction of the compassion, wisdom, and humility that His Majesty the King embodies every day, I know a better world would not just be possible but inevitable.

We are desperate for that change. I am desperate for that change. And I hold on to the hope that enough of us will rise to demand it before it’s too late.
