Now, generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Grammarly don’t just fix mistakes; they rewrite ideas, offer structure, and mimic human tone so real that even experienced editors can’t tell the difference.

The convenience is seductive. Who wouldn’t want flawless syntax, instantly generated ideas, or a perfect citation in APA 7? But here’s the catch. The more we rely on these tools, the more we offload our ability to think, struggle, and find the right words ourselves .

Academic Writing in the Age of Generative Fluency

Academic writing has always been more than clean grammar. It’s about making an argument, synthesising research, and producing a voice that reflects intellectual effort. But when generative AI can draft entire research papers, answer essay prompts, and rephrase arguments with academic ability, how do we ensure the student is still the person behind the text?

Imagine two students: one writes an essay after hours of reflection and editing, while the other uses AI responsibly for idea generation but still contributes genuine insights. Should their grades be the same? What if a third student pastes the prompt into a chatbot and turns in the result?

The line between acceptable help and academic dishonesty is now blurry and it’s getting blurrier every day.

When AI Becomes the Default

The scary part? We may not even notice when the line disappears. Future generations might grow up using tools that correct grammar in real time, suggest phrasing as they type, and generate entire paragraphs based on rough ideas. Human vocabulary, with all its imperfections, creativity, and emotional cues, may quietly be replaced by AI systems.

Will Universities eventually expect AI-polished work as the new standard? Will authentic, raw writing feel “unprofessional” or “lazy”? Will students have to intentionally write worse to prove a human wrote it?

  • Don’t Use AI to Write Your Entire Essay, That’s Not the Assignment: If you submit something entirely generated by AI, without embedding your own thought, voice, or struggle, you are not the author. Academic writing is not about sounding smart, it’s about becoming smart through writing.
  • Use AI for Support, Not for Soul: If you want to brainstorm ideas, generate outlines or check your grammar, you can. But never let AI build your core argument or emotional depth. That’s your job. Think of AI as your writing assistant, not a ghostwriter.
  • Don’t Trust AI Detectors, They’re the Wrong Solution: Having tested almost every AI detection tool on the market (except Turnitin, which isn’t available to individuals), I can confidently say that they don’t work. Not reliably. Human work gets flagged as AI. AI content passes off as human. The tools are black boxes full of guesswork and no accountability. Instead of relying on detection tools, we should promote process transparency by asking for thought logs, brainstorming notes, version history, and writing reflections.

Are Flaws on Purpose A New Kind of Authenticity Test?

In an ironic twist, many academic writers (based on my personal observation) are now intentionally leaving minor errors, such as spelling mistakes, grammatical slips, and awkward phrasing, not because they’re careless, but because they want to signal humanness. Why? Because AI is trained to be perfect. And perfection, strangely enough, is now suspicious.

Writers believe that AI detectors, built to catch machine-like precision, are more likely to label flawless essays as “AI-generated” so they throw in a few typos to pass as real. In a way, the presence of mistakes has become a badge of authenticity. Misspelled on purpose. Just proving I’m human. But this raises a deeper ethical and philosophical question. Have we truly reached a point where being imperfect is the only way to be believed?

Writing Beyond the Binary

We must recognise that writing is no longer about human vs. machine. It’s about intention, process, and honesty. The goal isn’t to disregard AI tools, nor to pretend it doesn’t exist. The goal is to nurture our brain in a world where machines can mimic its output, but not its reasoning, emotion, or integrity.

Don’t write to sound human. Write to be human.
